When do you need a root canal?

Root canal treatment (endodontics) is needed when the nerve tissue inside the tooth is damaged – from deep decay, trauma or a crack. Without treatment, infection in the root canal can spread to the bone and cause pain and tooth loss. Professional root canal treatment cleans the canals, seals them and allows the tooth to be kept for many years.

The treatment is done under local anaesthesia. In a clinic with advanced equipment and experience, even complex cases are treated successfully. After root canal treatment a restoration (filling or crown) is usually needed to protect the tooth.

Signs that you may need it: persistent pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling. It's important to see a dentist soon – delay can worsen the infection.
