What are clear aligners and how do they work?

Clear aligners are a series of appliances made of transparent medical-grade plastic. Each aligner is tailored to the tooth position at that stage of treatment: roughly every two weeks you switch to a new aligner that moves the teeth in small, controlled steps toward the final position. Planning is done in advance with software: based on a scan or impression, a 3D simulation of tooth movement is built for the entire treatment, and only then are the aligners produced. So the patient and dentist know in advance how many aligners, how long treatment will take and what the result will look like.

The material is usually polycarbonate or similar – thin, flexible and transparent. The aligner fits snugly over the teeth and applies gentle, continuous force to move them. Because it is removable, the patient must wear the aligners about 20–22 hours a day for treatment to succeed. Most patients adapt within a few days and find the aligners comfortable.

Who are clear aligners suitable for?

Clear aligners suit a wide range of cases – spacing, mild to moderate crowding, protrusion or retrusion, and minor bite corrections. Not every case is suitable: very severe crowding, large rotations or skeletal issues may require fixed braces or combined treatment. How does the treatment work – from first visit to finish?

Scan, digital plan and ordering aligners

At the first visit the dentist examines your teeth and gums, explains options and decides whether to proceed with clear aligners. If so, a digital scan (or traditional impression) is taken and sent for planning. A simulation of tooth movement over the coming months is built, and the number of aligners and treatment length are set. After you approve the plan, the aligners are made and sent to the clinic. Usually within a few weeks you receive your first aligners and usage instructions.

Wearing, changing and follow-up

You wear each aligner about 20–22 hours a day and switch to the next every two weeks. Remove only for meals and brushing. Follow-up visits are every six to eight weeks. At the end you usually receive a retainer to maintain the result.

Daily care and looking after your aligners

Brush the aligners gently with a toothbrush and a little toothpaste when removed; rinse in lukewarm water. Do not eat or drink coloured drinks (except water) with aligners in. Store them in the case provided when not in use. Avoid high heat so the plastic does not warp.
